Proper Use of Platform Ladder for Retail and Warehouse Environments
November 30, 2020Almost all retail and warehouse environments maximise platform ladders due to their accompanying features and capabilities. These ladders are self-support, non-adjustable ladders that are typically made from steel or aluminium, which are known for their lightweight and non-corrosive qualities. And as the name implies, they have platforms at the top so that workers can easily perform their respective tasks.
Since these ladders will be used at great heights, their usage must generally comply with the regulations set by the governing bodies. For a safer working environment on retail facilities and warehouses, here are some recommended ways that you can do when using a platform ladder.
Inspect the Ladder
If there is one thing that would make the ladder one step closer to safety, that would be to inspect it thoroughly. Before setting up or even using the ladder, you or your workers should inspect the rolling staircase and look for some damages or worn parts. You must also make sure that the ladder does not possess any slipping hazards like oil, grease, paint, or water. All issues or damages that have been identified must be repaired and resolved before using the ladder.
Set Up Properly
One way to ensure workplace safety is by setting up the platform ladder properly. A good platform ladder set up is normally based on the safety instructions or warnings that are provided by the manufacturer of the ladder. But generally, the ladder must be put up without any presence of people on the platform. Also, avoid mounting the ladder from the side or step from one ladder to another so that any accidents or injuries on the site will be prevented. It must also be installed on stable, dry, and level ground.
Wear Proper Clothing
Wearing proper clothing around the site where the ladder is installed must also be done by personnel to ensure their safety. When working with a platform ladder, all personnel must wear slip-resistant footwear to avoid slipping or tripping around it. Shirts must also be tucked in so that they can work comfortably and optimally. Avoid wearing sandals, flip-flops, or baggy clothing when working around a platform ladder.
Ascend Cautiously
When ascending or descending the rolling ladder, you or your workers must do so one step at a time. Doing this can help the ladder sustain the weight gradually and avoid instances of falls. Once ascended the rolling ladder, personnel must avoid adding extra height when performing tasks. Standing on top of boxes or buckets at the ladder’s platform is strongly not recommended.
Position Optimally
The positioning of the platform ladder and its components must be done optimally. If you are using the ladder in the pathways of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, you must make sure that there are safety cones and other clear signs around it to warn people about the area. The rolling ladder must likewise be positioned within or closer the arm’s reach to the associated task. Alternatively, repositioning the rolling staircase of the ladder must only be done if there are no personnel or tools on it.
